Educating Yourself About Canine Respiratory Illness

Canine respiratory illness mimics kennel cough, but veterinarians and experts are not sure if it is viral or bacterial, and kennel cough treatment methods are not effective. Experts also dont know what is causing the illness. They do know that it is highly contagious, progresses rapidly, and has affected hundreds of dogs across the country. Heres what you need to know about canine respiratory illness.

What Are the Symptoms of Canine Respiratory Illness?

The symptoms initially show up as a mild illness that seems like a cold. Symptoms get worse very quickly, however, and the illness rapidly progresses to pneumonia. If you notice these symptoms in your dog, make an appointment with a veterinarian:

  • Trouble breathing or labored breathing.
  • Wheezing.
  • Coughing and sneezing.
  • Fatigue.
  • Disinterest in food or activities.
  • Discharge from the nose or eyes.
  • Red or watery eyes.
  • Fever.
  • Dehydration.
  • Weight loss.
  • Blue or purple gums.

Which States Have Reported Dog Respiratory Illness?

The illness has been reported in at least 16 states, but is likely more widespread as some owners do not recognize or report symptoms:

  • Arizona.
  • Washington.
  • Oregon.
  • California.
  • Nevada.
  • Colorado.
  • Indiana.
  • Illinois.
  • Georgia.
  • Florida.
  • Massachusetts.
  • Rhode Island.
  • Pennsylvania.
  • Maryland.
  • Vermont.
  • New Hampshire.

How Does the Illness Spread?

The illness spreads through close contact and breathing the same air as an infected dog. You can reduce your dogs risk of getting sick by following these tips:

  • Get your dog vaccinated for other respiratory illnesses.
  • Avoid boarding your dog in kennels or boarding facilities.
  • Avoid going to areas with a lot of dogs, like dog parks, grooming facilities, doggy day care, and homes with other dogs.
  • Dont let your dog touch noses with or sniff other dogs.
  • Dont let your dog eat or drink from communal food or water bowls or share toys.

If your dog is showing any symptoms of illness, make an appointment with your veterinarian right away.
